Price With deep regret it becomes our painful task to record the death of Mr. Matthew Price, our late R.M. who died at five o'clock on Thursday, July 26, at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. Matthews, wife of Mr. Matthews, manager of the Gisborne branch of the Bank of New Zealand, after a long and painful illness. Sterling honesty, integrity and justice characterised his whole life both in public and private. May our great loss be his glorious gain. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon, the hearse being followed by a number of vehicles and equestrians. On arrival at the cemetery some slight delay occurred on account of the grave not being completed. The bad state of the roads prevented many from accompanying the body to its final resting place.

He then accepted a magistracy in Victoria. On the West Coast (SI) he was the first R.M. and Warden. He was transferred to Gisborne in 1880 and died on 26 July, 1883. _______________________________________________________________________________

Matthew Price Biography:

Matthew Price was born in Italy to Matthew Guerin Price, a Private Banker and Countess Caroline Raphael about Jan 1818. Price is a Welsh name from "ap Rhys" meaning the son of Rhys.

His childhood and education is unknown, but he must have gone to a military college and joined the Army, eventually rising to Captain in the Madras Army of the East India Company.

He married Elizabeth Donaldson Traveller at the Cathedral, Madras, India on 18 January 1840, aged 22. Elizabeth is noted by Matthew in his bible as being born in India on the 1st May 1820. From the birthplaces of their children in the Price family bible we can trace his career around the world. Elizabeth's parents were Cornelius and Elizabeth (nee Donaldson) Traveller. Her father was a clergyman and they were married in 1818 on the Isle of Wight.

He was in Bangalore, Southern India in December 1840 (Edward); probably on leave in Brighton, Sussex in March 1844 (Alice); back in Bangalore in December 1845 (Jessie); in Ootacamund, Milgheny(Nilgiri?) Hills, India in May 1847 (Charles); to Dacca, Bengal in February 1850 (Grace) and back to Tiverton, Devon in January 1852 (Susan).

Their leave gives a clue to where their families may have lived in England, it may be that Matthew's father M G Price lived in Brighton and Elizabeth's family lived in Devon. The bible was a gift dated 1st December 1844, Brighton. Frances remembers a family story where the journey from England to India involved riding on camels across the desert isthmus from Port Said to Suez before the canal was built in 1875.

He must have left the Army in Devon and emigrated to Australia in 1852 because he is mentioned as connected with the Ovens Goldfield in December 1852. His daughter Susan, born in Devon, died in Melbourne in May 1853. Another child (Matthew) was born in Brighton, (Melbourne) Australia in August 1854.

The family moved to Beechworth (on the Victorian border, midway between Melbourne and Sydney) where he was a Police Inspector and in 1856 took over from William Turner to become the second Resident Warden on the nearby Ovens Goldfield in Victoria. Mary was born in Beechworth in April 1857. His predecessor was on a salary of 950 pounds, so he was probably on a similar salary. In the book "Beechwood - A Titan's Field, The Chinese Puzzle" on the Australian gold rush he is mentioned honourably in several incidents where he tried to stop the persecution of the Chinese gold diggers in July 1857. He resigned from the post at Ovens Goldfield in mid 1859.

The MacDonald Dictionary mentions Ballarat, so he may have visited there but left his family housed in Melbourne. The Indian Mutiny was in 1857, well after he left the East India Company, so it was not the reason for leaving India implied by MacDonald, but the unrest in the North preceeding it may have been the reason for being transferred from Bangalore to Dacca. (The East India Company was dissolved by the British Government after the Mutiny, and with it the army.)

The family then came to Invercargill about 1859 where he was a Resident Magistrate, and a daughter (Florence) was born in December 1860. He stayed some time in Invercargill, he is on the electoral rolls for Wallace 1865-1867 as having a "household, house and 3 acres of land, Pt of Sec 2 Blk I Invercargill Hundred, known as part of Barwhey's Farm".

Two of his daughters married in Invercargill, Alice Louisa Price married William Nurse in 1866 and Grace Price married George Martin in 1874.

He next moved to Hokitika to become Warden of the Goldfields perhaps after 1874. There his wife Elizabeth died on 25 April 1877, aged 56.

The McDonald Dictionary comments that "He was peppery, wore a frock coat and top hat and had many brushes with R J Seddon." (Richard Seddon, King Dick, later Prime Minister.) Seddon was a Miner's Advocate at Kumara.

He moved on again to Gisborne as a Resident Magistrate sometime around 1879, where another daughter, Florence, was married in June 1880 to John William Matthews, BNZ Bank Manager. They had a son, Athol Price Matthews born 4 April 1881.

He died at the Bank of New Zealand dwelling (Florence's house) on 26 July 1883 aged 65 years 7 months. The death certificate mentions 4 sons and 3 daughters living, but it must be 3 sons and 4 daughters. The house was a large well known building featured in a book of photographs of early Gisborne.

There is no record of what happened to the other children: Edward, Charles, Matthew or Mary.

To qualify for furlough a minimum of 10 years service was required. The period of furlough was 3 years with full pay for 2-1/2 years and the last six months was withheld until the officer returned to India.

No explanation of the codes were in the register, but it appears that he joined the regiment on 1 April 1839. The capital C means that he was promoted to Captain on 31 January 1852 while on furlough, perhaps when he resigned or retired from the regiment. This would have given him a more generous pension.

Retirement due to poor health was set at half pay for a Lieutenant who had served at least 3 years which in 1853 was 73 pounds per year, so he would have been on 146 pounds while in India. A Captain's pay was 252 pounds per annum.

He would not have moved to Vizagapatam because he was on leave at the time hence the blank season. Note that Grace (254) was born in Dacca in Feb 1850. Was he on leave already then? If so why was he 1000 miles away in the Bengal district?

While technically he retired as a Captain he worked as a Lieutenant and was listed as such in the Register.
