Educated at Christ's College (89) 1859-62. Dudley Scholar 1860. XI 1860-62 and was captain in his last year. He played for Canterbury v Otago in 1868. He played in a match College & Union v Albion and made 22 - top score of the match. He was one of the 6 boys who signed the farewell address to Dean Jacobs when he left Christ's College in July 1863. He was Hon Sec to the Chch Cricket Club in 1864. In Sept the Chch and Canty Cricket Clubs amalgamated and became the United Canterbury Cricket Club. They had a new ground opposite the hospital, newly levelled and sown down by A Stewart. The pavilion was moved from the old ground and a ledge planted round it. They still had a balance in the bank of 27 pounds. This was chiefly due to ECJ Stevens, Harley and Ollivier himself. Ollivier was unamimously appointed Sec to the new club. He was a member of the committee of the Chch Football Club May 1867. In a match played on New Years Day 1868 between teams picked from the United CC representing Tall and Short (an original method of selecting a team as far as the writer's experience goes) he played for Tall and made top score of the match (68). Apparently he left Chch that year. The committee of the United Club expressed their regret at his leaving Sept 1868. In 1869 he was admitted a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Wellington. He went into partnership with Travers and conducted his first case in Aug 1869.
