Christ's College CC 179 July 1862-1865

Arthur Morton Ollivier, the [eighth] son of John Ollivier, was born in England on 22 March 1851 and came out with his parents in the John Taylor in 1853. He was educated at Christ's College 1862-65 [CC 179] and the School List gives a condensed account of his cricket career:

He played for CC XI 1863; Canty XI v Otago 1867,68,71,73,75,76,77,79. The prize bat given by Miss Mathias was won by him in Dec 1864. He played for Canty v Auckland 1873-82; v Victorian Club 79; v All England XI 1877; v Aust XI 1878,80; Canty XI v Auck 1875; v Otago 1880.

Fellow of Christ's College 1895-97. President of Christs College Old Boys Association 1895-97. He was an unusual all round athlete being almost as good at football as cricket. He played cricket regularly for the United CC. He captained a football team in a game at Latimer Square 25 July 1868. [Charles also played] C R Blaikston captained the other side. He was second in the batting averages for the 70-71 season, his total being 380. [... etc ...]

Besides his skill at games he was a good athlete and won the CCOB 200 yards race in 1872 the first time it was run. He was put on the scratch mark next year.

He made 141 for the Wanderers v Ashley Co Nov 1879. Centuries were so rare as to be great events in those days of Canterbury cricket: this was only the second noted by the writer up to that time.

He, E C J Stevens and Andrew Duncan were the first to discuss the purchase of the block of land that later became Lancaster Park. They wanted a ground where they could charge for admission and keep themselves in funds. In July 1881 450 one pound shares were sold and they were able to buy 11 acres. They drained it with field pipes (it had been a very wet part of Christchurch), and some of the sections around the outside were sold for building sections.

Ollivier was an accountant by profession. He first joined J D MacPherson, stock and station agents and was then in charge of the accounts department of J T Ford. He took Trevor J Gresson into partnership in Aug 1882.

He had become very fond of his garden in Opawa, but the new club at Lancaster Park tempted him back to cricket. He retired from cricket again in 1883, "carrying with him" said the Lyttelton Times, "the respect and regret of all those with whom he had played. He has been a steadfast and enthusiastic supporter of the game." He was a great gardener and took prizes for roses.

He was the sole selector for Canty Rep Cricket Team of 1884-85. This was a new departure. He wrote to the Lyttelton Times pointing out the necessity of practising fielding and of physical fitness in Nov 1884.

He was a member of the Heathcote Roads Board in 1893. They had got a new clerk, C C McCaulley. Ollivier at the annual meeting said he did not like the look of the accounts. He said that the accounts had been kept in such a manner as could usually be taken as disclosing an attempt to embezzle. McCaulley sued him for 500 pounds damages for libel. Ollivier got the verdict. Ollivier and Gresson dissolved the partnership about 1896.

Besides being selector he did a good deal of coaching and was strict on making players practice fielding. He was the backbone of Canterbury cricket for long after he had ceased to play for Canterbury. In his playing days he was a very good short stop - which was responsible for stopping fast balls which beat the wicketkeeper. [first slip?]

He was on the committee of the Chch Musical Society in May 1871 and was a member of St Marks Choir and was well known in Chch as a lover of music. He was also very fond of chess and played regularly at the Chess Club. He was chess champion of New Zealand in 1888.

He was secretary of the newly formed amalgamated Musical Soc in May 1873. The Chch Musical and Mendelshon Socs joined together to form the Chch Philharmonic Soc. The committee was A Carrick, J Thomson, qv G Palaviet.

Later in life he took to alpine climbing and was an active member of the Alpine Club. He [and Mrs O] took part in the E A Fitzgerald expedition to Mt Cook in Jan 1895. [see photo album with John Ollivier] He was a keen fisherman and a prominent member of the Acclimatisation Soc.

He was a valuable member of the Christ's College Board of Governors because of his knowledge of finance and was principally responsible for reviving the CCOBA of which he was President for 3 years.

He burst a blood vessel in Nov 1881 and was seriously ill for a time. He died after a long struggle against a hopeless illness on 21 Oct 1897 aged 46 at Opawa. [liver cancer on d. cert]
