Notes

The Rev Walter Norman Higgins, formerly Archdeacon of Wells, died on Friday at the age of 77. He was born in 1880, the son of Henry Higgins of Gloucester, and was educated at King's College School, Brunton, and at Emmanuel College, Cambridge. After his ordination he held curacies at Battersea and Herne Hill before going out to Australia to lecture at St Barnabas College, Adelaide for a year. He was priest-in-charge of St Marks, Maylands, South Australia, from 1909 to 1914 and Rector from 1914-17. He was for some years domestic chaplain to the Bishop of Adelaide and later honorary chaplain. From 1916 to 1918 he was chaplain to the Australian Imperial Forces (in France). He returned to England on his acceptance of the living of All Saints, Portsea, in 1917 and he stayed in Hampshire until 1926 when he became rector of Great Bookham, Surrey. Eight years later he moved to Mells with Vobster, Somerset. While holding this living in 1940 he was chosen as Archdeacon of Wells and appointed Prebendary of Huish and Brent. He remained Archdeacon until 1951. From 1947 to 1954 he was Canon of Cudworth in Wells Cathedral. He married in 1913 Dora Molyneux, daughter of John Quilter. They had a son and two daughters.
