Rober Peel Crosbie wat the 2nd son of Robert Crosbie of liverpool and of Kilop? kirlaid highlands?. He was appointed accountant to the railways in 1863. (when the only railway line was the Chch - Ferrymead line). He was Hon. Sec. to the Heathcote Regatta, New year's DAy 1864, and helped to organise the Rival Sports on that day. The next Heatcote Regatta was held on Boxind Day 1864 (probably not to clash with Lyttelton). His home was Stratford Cottage, Avonside. He married John Ollivier's daughter Harriet in Feb 1865. He was elected a Lieutenant in the engineer Co. Canty Rifle Volunteers (of which George Holmes was capt.) but resigned in 1867. He was sec to a concert given in Barnards Repository (Tattersalls) 1 June 1863. in aid of the funds of the Canterbury musical Society. The visiting English Opera Coy. which was in Chch helped; and Barnard gave his Repository free and also supplied 500 "fairy" lamps. 1600 people paid for admittance but the expenses exceeded the takings by 9 pounds. He was a member of the committee of the Railway Rowing Club Sept 1867. He samg "The Pilgrims of Love" at the Albion Cricket Club Show at the Theatre Royal Oct 1867. He took part in a race for pairs on the Avon in the Old Black Eagle. He was stroke, W Heaps? q.v. was bow and his cox was A Brundsen. We Troy's boat Naneleto won the race, Nov 1867. In 1867 he was elected Commodore of the Railway Rowing Club. The club had just imported a new pair ?? boat from Melbourne. This was half-outrigged and was 2 feet in the beam - a reduction on most of those in use, In july 1868 he recided "The Raven" at a Penny Reading at the Town Hall. The Lyttelton Times said he had evidently studied the poem with great care. He was on the Committee of the Union Rowing Club (which had succeeded the Railway Club) Sep 1869. He was one of the two owners of a "water velocipede" (a bicycle mounted on floats) to be pedalled through the water. They were a complete failure. He was always to the fore in anything which had for its aim popular amusement or sport and was continually giving readings, recitations on songs at "Penny Readings". (The object was to keep working men out of the hotels in the evenings.) He was on the Committee of the Popular Amusements Association which organised the Annual Sports, Latimar Square (Worcester St did not run through the square at that time) He gave evidence before the select committee of the Prov Commission which enquired into Railways management Aug 1871. He was for years on the Committee of the Canty Rifle Assoc. and often presided at its meetings. He and E W Tippetts organised the testimonial to John Marshman when he resigned his post as manager of the railways. He composed and sang the NZ National Anthem - whatever that might have been. It was called "All Hail Zealandia", Feb 1865. His last Railway job was stationmaster at Riccarton. He was an Hon Life Member of Canty.
